Anson is a city in and the county seat of Jones County Texas. Anson is about a 25 minute drive from Abilene. It is about 26 miles north and slightly west of Abilene. Anson is also part of the Abilene, Texas Metropolitan Statistical Area.
Anson was originally named Jones City. Then the town was renamed Anson in 1882 in honor of Anson Jones, the last president of the Republic of Texas.
It is home to the Texas Cowboys'' Christmas Ball. The Christmas Ball is a 3 night event held before Christmas at Pioneer Hall. If you happen to stop in the post office take a few minutes to see the mural called "Cowboy Dance." It was painted by Jenne Magafan in 1941. Anson also has a statue of Anson Jones in front of the court house, as well as the Anson Jones Museum.
